New Starch Factory
ASHBURTON, Jan. 5. The only one of its kind in New Zealand or Australia, a factory recently established near Ashburton is producing potato starch at a very satisfactory rate, supplying a market that was previously supplied by Holland, Denmark and Poland. It is expected there will bo a ready demand for the product of the new factory. Sales to Australia are also , likely. The growers of the potatoes used will receive a return in the vicinity of £5 a ton. It requires about seven tons of potatoes to produce a ton of starch. First grade starch is priced at £3B a ton and second grade at £32 a ton. The Government is giving a subsidy of £6 ou every ton of starch made at the Ashburton factory. The plant, which cost about £2OOO, is capable of handling 50 tons of potatoes a day, working 24 hours. Running costs are small.
