A London cable states that there is still no news of Mr. and Mrs. Or. C. Codlin, who were on a British vessel sunk by a German raider. Mr. Codlin was formerly manager of the Auckland Herald and Melbourne Argus and was returning from London to New Zealand on holiday.

A well-known resident of Marton, Mr. David Gibson, died at his residence, lliimphrey Street, Marton, on New Year's Day, aged 87 years. In April, 1938, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding and received many messages of congratulation. Mr. Gibson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and married Miss Margaret Patersou, of Glasgow, in Wanganui, on April 18, 1888. He went farming in various parts of Taranaki, coming to liangitikei about 38 years ago to farm in the Tutaenui district. After being on the land for some 18 years in Rangitikei, he went into retirement and settled in Humphrey Street. Ho continued to take an active interest in farming topics and horticulture until his death. Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife, four sons, Alan (Marton), James (Kaponga), Jack (Ivaponga), and Archie (Feilding), and two daughters, Mrs. M. Wysocki (Marton) and Mrs. Marshall Anderson (Parewanui). Another son, David, died several years ago.

The death occurred last week at his homestead at Waewaepa, Dannevirke, of Mr. Godfrey Norris Pharazyn, who had resided there at various times since he acquired the property in 1895. Mr. Pharazyn, who was in his 68th. year, was widely known throughout New Zealand and was universally respected. He was the only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Pharazyn, of Wellington, and at the age of eight years went to England to be educated, going first to a private school, then to Marlborough College, and finally to Trinity College. Cambridge. On his return to the Dominion he bought Waewaepa in 1895. In 1902 Mr. Pharazyn married the youngest daughter of Hon. Walter Johnston and Mrs. Johnston, of Highden, Awaliuri, and there were five children of the marriage. The eldest son, Flight-Lieutenant W. F. Pharazyn, was killed in a flying accident in England in 1938, while formation flying in Berkshire with the R.A.F. The youngest son, Mr. Peter Pharazyn, also in the Royal Air Force, was killed near Canterbury, Kent, about eight years ago, in a flying accident. The surviving son, Mr. David Pharazyn, is serving in Egypt with the First Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. There are two married daughters—Mrs. John Westmacott, wife of Commander John Westmacott, Royal Navy, who is at present at Waewaepa, and Mrs. Geoffrey Cavendish, who is residing in Hertfordshire, England.
