(From Our Own Correspondent.) Breaking their journey south on Wednesday, Mr. and Mrs. G. Sylvester (Yv'ellingtOn) were the guests of Mrs. Sylvester’s sister, Mrs. J. A. Forces—Privates T. Sunloy, R. Quinlan, D. Aitcheson and E. Easton. The function is to bo held in the Parish Hall on Saturday night (November 2), and during the evening a presentation will be made to the men. Bowling Season Opens Reference was made to the recent death of Mr. W. H. Gunning by Mr. C. Hook (president) at the official opening of tho Shannon Bowling Club last Saturday; Mr. Gunning was a foundation member of the club and members had a great deal for which to thank him. Those present stood in silence for several moments as a mark of respect to the late gentleman. Mr. Hook further made reference to the excellent work carried out by Mr. Doige in his capacity of greenkeeper, for which position the speaker regretted that Mr. Doige’s services would not be available this, season. Owing to the inability of the club to obtain another greenkeeper, it had been nececssary to postpone the opening of the Croquet Club. Mr. Hook sent up the first bowl, and the afternoon was passed in friendly games. Visitors were present at the opening from Takaro, Terrace End, Foxton and Levin Central Clubs. Cribbage Season Closes The official closing of the activities of the Shannon-Mangaoro Cribbage Club was observed on Tuesday night, when a match for the Cribbage Shield was played, representatives from Shannon and Mangaore (24 players in all) participating. The honours on this occasion went to Mangaore by 32 games to 28. The visitors from Shannon were tnado welcome by Mr. A. Blackwood, who remarked, in thanking tho Shannon players for their support, that without this the club would probably have been unable to carry on. The speaks? expressed thanks to Mr. T. C. Thwaites for organising tho visits at the Shannon end. Thanking Mr. Blackwood for his remarks, Mr. Thwaites stressed tho pleasure the visitors derived from tne evenings and expressed appreciation of the work of ’ players in the interests of the club and particularly Mr. A. Siraes, who had been indefatigable in this direction.
