A GIFT Mr. R. Stewart, owner of Beau Vite, the Melbourne Clip favourite, is the possessor of a gold fountain pen and a gold pencil, presented to him in extraordinary circumstances, says the oydney Morning Herald. Mr. Stewart was accosted in George Street, Sydney, by a man who asked him if he would accept a small gift to commemorate Beau Vite’s excellent form in {Sydney. ‘ 1 I had good wins over him,” tho stranger said, ‘ and although I have not met you, I have seen you many times, and have noticed that you carry a fountain pen and a pencil which do not match. I have bought you these. ’ ’ Mr. Stewart was nonplussed for a moment or two, but the approach was so friendly that ho accepted the gifts. “But now we must meet properly. Will you tell me your name?” ho said. 'No, I would rather that I remained anonymous,” said the- stranger. With a few more pleasantries, he went his way. "They are beautiful gifts,” said Mr. Stewart, in telling the story. ”1 have had them engraved, and I value them. But I will say this: I missed my oddments for a few days. I have had the old pen and pencil for a good many yoars, and I placed a sentimental value on them. However, they are honourably retired.” TROTTING FIXTURES November 2—Wellington T.C.
