Terrace End Progressive Association

i . J , Several matters affecting Terrace ; i End were discussed at a meeting of the ’ Terrace End Progressive Association. , * The chair was occupied by Mr. J. A. 1 ( Nash (president) in the absence of Mr. E. Anderson (chairman of the committee). i j It was reported that a light which ] had been placed in the lobby of the Terraco End Post Office following representations to the Chief Postmaster ( had resulted in a big improvement. The department is to be thanked for acceding to the request, i The City Council advised the receipt < i ; of the association’s donation of £SO towards the cosit of conveniences at , Fitzroy Park and of a dressing shelter ■ for girls. The sum of £3O donated last 1 year would be applied toward the pro- 1 ! vision of children’s playing equipment, , ias desired. The letter thanked the as- j . sociation for its continued interest in i ike development of the park and stated that the city engineer (Mr. J. R. - * Hughes) had been instructed to report i ' to the reserves committee as to the pos- j 1 sible purchase of tubular steel piping.' > for the construction of playground * equipment. In another letter the coun 1 cil advised that it would not be pos- 1 sible to carry out the improvements! (for Which the £SO had been donated) j this year. In the meantime the city engineer had been authorised to provide temporary accommodation. The Manawatu Automobile Associal tion forwarded a copy of a letter re- j j ceived from the telegraph engineer as to the request for the shifting of a tele--1 graph pole at the corner of Ruahine 7 Street and 3lain Street. The letter 3 stated that the pole carried both telegraph and power lines, but its removal was not justified alt present. However, . when the pole required attention as a result of deterioration, modification of, , the department’s plant or reading alter- j 1 ations, it would be replaced by a pole | " j away from the corner. In the mean-! > j time the pole would be painted white in , order to assist motorists. M The City Council forwarded a copy ' of a letter received from the General 7 Manager of Railways stating that rail- j ’ way trucks would, in future, be left at * b , least two truck-lengths distant from j the footpath on either side of Albert | ,! Street so that the view of road traffic j '! would not be obstructed. It was re- " ported that this was now being done and had resulted in a grealt improve- , J ment. j 3lr. L. Gardner forwarded a memorandum on the difficulties facing children attending the Terrace End School

when they would be pupils of the Intermediate School next year. The associa- ■ tion decided, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. F. J. Oakley, that if the Terrace End School Committee [ made representations on the matter the s association would lend its support. The , chairman expressed the opinion that 5 the School Committee was the proper body to take up such a matter. ! It was reported that membership

subscriptions had been secured freely and that there was a prospect of a greater number being received than was the case last year. On the suggestion of Mr. W. Brown, it was decided to write to the City Council seeking the provision of a light over a letter box at the railway crossing on to Napier Road. Mr. Brown said the situation of the box was dark and ho had heard several remarks passed on it.
