United Guild Reviews Work for Refugees

Major Mrs. Dick presided over a meeting of the United Guild held yesterday in the Jade tea-rooms, there being a good attendance. It was agreed to accept with gratitude if still oj>en the offer of the Women’s Division for space on their stall at the show to display goods made by tho United Guild to demonstrate what could be done in re-making old garments. The report, read by 31iss Jones, stated: —Work lias gone on steadily during the month, live cases having been despatched to Wellington, one containing 67 pairs of very good shoos. The total number of garments desj>atched to date is 7500. The work brought in from the associated guilds and institutes has been remarkably good, some of the infants’ garments being more like show exhibits. Drive material from Wellington has been reconditioned in the workroom. Another caso of drive material has arrived from Wellington, so that there is plenty of work to be going on with. Apart from these goods wo nave a considerable amount of new material purenased for us by the Cuba Street Methodist Guild to the value of £5 14s. This is being made up into sleeping suits and warm frocks for little girls. A gift, of a handsome pair of cutting out scissors was donated by 31rs. Glendinning’s sewing circle and £6 worth of material is on order from C. M. Rosj Co. for us to mako up in due course There have been two gifts of £1 each from 31iss Collis and Miss Bartlett for the purchase of women’s underclothes. Samples of wool Ijavo been sent down from Auckland from a spinning circle there, which works conjunction with a knitting circle which it can supply; these can be seen in the workroom where Mrs. McMahon demonstrates spinning. Letters of sympathy have been sent during the month to Mrs. Brooker and Mrs. Inglis, both of whom are ill; also letters of condolence for bereavement to Mrs. W. Field and Mrs. J. C. Young. Henson, Briden-Jones, Watchorns Ltd., Barraud and Abraham, F.D.C., Mr. and 31rs. Oliver, Messrs. Me After and Noilson (dry cleaners). To give an insigtit into the need for work for refugefes, moving extracts of reports of what was happening among the French and Belgian refugees as supplied by the World’s Y.W .C.A. were read to the meeting by Miss Jones. 3lrs. treasurer. Future activities were discussed, it being agroed work must continue. Mrs. Bale reported on a meeting of the district committee of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary and gave notice of a general meeting.
