Farewell at Mangamutu

DISTRICT HONOURS POPULAR TEACHER PRESENTATION TO MR. G. M. SLATER A tribute to his eight years’ work as a master at the Pahiatua District High School and a member of the Scarborough School Committee was paid to Mr. G. M. Slater last Saturday evening on the eve of his departure on promotion to the South Island. The Mangamutu Hall was filled with an exceptionally large gathering from Pahiatua, Mangamutu, Kaifcawa, Konini and Kohinui. On behalf of the assembly, Mr. J. G. Brechin congratulated Mr. Slater -and wished him and his family every success and happiness in their new home, tie referred in glowing terms to Mr. Slater’s career as a teacher and made grateful reference to his interest in school sports and out of school activities suen as the calf club, which had become an important feature of the life of schools in these parts. Mr. Slater was then presented with a bronze Coal box and fire screen to match as a parting gift from his Mangamutu friends among whom he was popular and respected. Mrs. Slater and her three daughters were tho recipients of posies made by Mrs. L. J. Heayns. Mr. Slater acknowledged the gift with gratitude and, tnanking Mr. Brechin for his remarks, said that the years ho had spent in Pahiatua were very happy ones. The evening was spent dancing to music supplied by Mrs. A. Tait. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr. B. Vile and Miss J. Selby. A home-made supper was provided by the Mangamutu ladies and was much enjoyed.
