Festal Evensong at All Saints’ Church

The patrolal festival at All Saints’ Church commenced last evening with festal evensong when the choir was augmented with visitors from All Saints’ (Foxton), John the Baptist (Hunterville) and St. Peter’s (Terrace End). Other choirs were prevented from attendance on account of petrol restrictions. The service was intoned by Rev. D. V. de Candole. Rev. G. B. Stote-Blandy was and preacher. Preaching from the text Romans 1.7, “Called to be saints,” he dwelt upon the distinguishing marks of a saint, which were faith, humility, holiness, truth to life and prayer. The service commenced with the processional hymn, “Disposer Supreme,” after the vcrsieles and response, Psm. 145 was sung. The lessons were read by Rev. 11. Wilson (All Saints’) and P. Wiltshire (Hunterville). The anthem was “Lo, Round the Throne,” sung to a medieval melody harmonised and arranged by Ley. The hymn before the sermon was “Who Are These Like Stars Appearing,” and after the sermon, “The Saints of God, Their Conflict Past.” After a solemn procession sung to Vaughan Williams’ setting of “For All the Saints.” Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus was sung before the altar. The vicar, Rev. Canon G. T. Woodward, prenounced the blessing.
