Alliance Report Unconfirmed in London

LONDON, Sept. 25. It is officially stated that tho report of a German-Japaneso defensive alliance is unconfirmed. Officials at Washington received with reserve reports of a Japanese-German defence alliance. They do not doubt that diplomatic collaboration exists, but regard the Shanghai reports as a trial balloon to test the opinion of the remainder of the world, and particularly that of tho United States. Such a pact, it was said, would throw Japan openly into war with Britain and would certainly aggravate tho strained relations with the United States. The American Secretary of the Navy, Colonel Knox, said he had not had conversations regarding the possible use of Singapore by the United States Fleet. Ho added that he did not think the cruiser Augusta would be going to Singapore.
