Pahiatua Magistrate’s Court

MONTHLY SITTING Before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., yesterday, A. H. Gowler, of Pahiatua, was charged with driving a car without a licence. Sergeant Whiting stated that Gowler was driving another man’s car for him and had a slight accident in Main Street late at night. He had previously held a driving licence. A lino of 10s and 3s costs were imposed. For riding his bicycle carelessly in Main Street, Pahiatua, on September 3, Patrick O’Brien was finod £1 and 10s costs.

| Lawrence Herbert Leith was charged with selling milk which did not comply jwith standard prescribed by Regulations in that it contained 11 per cent, of added water and was deficient in milk solids other than fat. i Mr. J. M. Swain, district health inspector, in the witness stand, described ibis buying milk from Leith’s dairy in Pahiatua, and sending the samples to Wellington for analysis. Replying to tho Bench, he said he thought the offcnco had been an accident and not wilful as ho had taken samples regularly from Leith’s dairy for the past three years and from this source of supply ho had never before found anything wrong.

Leith was fined £5 with costs 10s and analysis fee of 10s Gd. T. C. Cornford, Victoria Street, Pahiatua, had the. misfortune to allow ono of his house chimneys to catch alight last Sunday afternoon and it cost him a 5s fine and 10s costs. Mr. Manson, of the Rutland Hotel, had his second chimney fire last Saturday night. A fine of 10s and 10s costs was imposed. Robert B. Warnock parked his motortruck on the wrong side of tho Main Street, Pahiatua, on August 29. It cost him a fine of 10s and 12s costs. K. McDonald was caught drinking in his car outside the Pongaroa Hall on the night of July 26 by Constable C. W. Gainey; for this offence he was fined £3 and £1 Is 3d costs. L. Wright for a similar offence out side tho same hall, on the night of September 9, was fined £5 and £1 Is 3d costs. Sergeant Whiting informed the Court that this was his second offence James W. Swanncy, garage proprio tor, of Pahiatua, wa3 charged w r ith supplying motor-spirit to a man who did not hold a licence.

Sergeant Whiting, who conducted the case for the Crown, stated that on May 2 he sold nine gallons of petrol, then on the 4th, Bth, 10th and tho 11th he supplied 50 gallons. Swanncy ploaded f guilty. Ho was fined £1 on each of the five charges with 10s costs.
