OROUA DOWNS There was a gpod attendance at the November meeting, when Mrs. Smith expressed pleasure at seeing Mr*. Albrey back again after being absent some months on account of ill health. A letter was read from Mr. Toomey expressing thanks for a donation towards the leper fund. It was decided to enter both competitions at the Feeding .Show. Arrangements were finalised for the garden party on Saturday also the children’s party which is to be held next Institute day, the third Tuesday in the month. The competitions will be held as usual that day. Several cornea of “Pioneer Tales” arc to be procured for members. A very interesting talk on Food preservation and demonstration on bandaging was given by Miss Hazel Johnson. Miss Johnson stressed the importance of women working at home in the time of war rather .han helping in outside bodies. The results ot the competitions were:—Seniors, sponge roll, Mrs. Francis 1, Mrs. Proctar 2; Juniors, shortbread, Miss J. Jarvis 3, Miss A. Christensen 2; fioral, Mrs. Oliver. Competitions for December will be: Seniors, three best vegetables; Juniors, shoe tree and coat-hanger; floral, gladioli and the hostesses will be Mesdames Oliver, Burling, Misses N. Cotton and P. Gray. BUNNYTHORPE Mrs. Jackson presided over a good attendance at the November meeting. Apologies were received from Mesdames Donald, Martini, Pederson and Abraham. Mrs. Meads was enrolled as new member. Correspondence was 'received from the Feilding show committee, and it was decided to deal with it during the next meeting. During the afternoon, Miss Hazel Johnson of Massey College gave a very interesting lecture, dealing first with nutrition, the photographs of rats and chickens which were on display, showed fully the value of milk, whole or skimmed, as an article of diet. Combination of foods too played an important part, Miss Johnson first illustrated the wrong combination then showed the right combination, which gave the vitamins etc. for building up of the body and keeping one healthy. Food preservation was also dealt with, the lecturer stressing the necessity for the growing of more and more vegetables. Suggestions were made to have competitions each month for vegetables insted of flowers as at present. After afternoon tea Miss Johnson explained and demonstrated the art of cutting and rolling bandages and other necessary appliances for first aid. The competitions for tapestry was aid. The competition for tapestry resulted: Miss J. Sinclair 1, Mrs. Bicknell 2; the best bloom, Mrs. Bicknell 1, Mrs. Harris 2. Nevt month is the children’s Christmas party, members wer# also reminded of the 6d gift exchange. The competitions will be for the best bloom and three kinds of sw’eeta

(lollies). The golden thread talk will be given by Mesdames Weastell and H. Jefferies. Hostesses—all member*. It was decided to have a flower show on the last Saturday in February—schedules have been drawn up and should be available shortly. It is expected that all members will cooperate to make the show a success.
