AUSTRALIAN PETROL PRICE
(Received 23. 1.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 23. Representatives of the oil companies said to-day that there was no immediate intention to increase the price of petrol. It was recently reported that the retail price was to be raised 6d a gallon, the increase to be devoted to the Commonwealth’s war finance. Later, if the war went on, some slight increase might be necessary, the oil representatives said, but there was no reason why the price should soar. At Canberra, the Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, said that a report that the announcement of a probable increase of Cd a gallon in the price of petrol had emanated from the Ministry of Information would be investigated. It has been suggested that the report was put out by the Ministry to test the public reaction.
