A DISAPPOINTING RACE According to a southern report, the South Canterbury Steeplechase, run at Washdyke on Saturday, was a dis appointing race. Chile was missing, having broken a shoulder when he fell in a school on Thursday. This left eight starters, five of them Grand National candidates, but only four finished. Black Banner fell at the first fence and was got back to the birdcage with difficulty, having seriously injured a shoulder. Contract, having his second start during the day, ran off at tho stand double, and at the next fence, turning to the back, Tom Cat lost his rider. Pandine jumped past Burwood and Culverden at the stand double. After going about seven furlongs, Burwood headed Pandine. There ! was no further change till they reached the straight, with a round to go. Cot tingham slipped going to the first of the double, hit the fence, and fell on landing. Burwood continued in the lead, giving a good exhibition of jumping, though he slipped into one fence, and lie won easily. He is a Grand National possibility*. Pandine tired badly, Culverden heading him half a mile from home. FROM VARIOUS SOURCES Power Chief, Catalogue and Old Surrey are due to leave for Biccarton to-day*. Inheritance was very well ridden in the Bracelet at Alarton on Saturday .but when asked for a final effort to I withstand tho brilliant challenge by iGladium he could not respond und ho (was decisively beaten. Though she has not raced for some 'considerable time, Mittie ran a surprisingly good race in the Riddiford Handicap at Marton. Her effort indicated that she is not far from her top form.
