High Praise for Quist
Received Monday, 9.20 p.m. NEW YORK, July 24.
The press warmly applauds Quist’s form at Boston. The tennis writer in tho New York Times says Quist showed all-round excellence. He emphasises America’s formidable task in the challenge round. “It was obviously beyond Mako’s capacity to resist the carefully taken flat drives and facile volleying of a rival whose bearing throughout reflected the cool unconcern of a master workman with complete confidence in the fidelity and adequacy of his tools.”
The New York Herald Tribune tennis writer says Mako and Parker are not pulling together. Asked if he and Parker will play at Seabright, Mako replied emphatically: “We will not.” He added that he expected to pair with Babin. Parker was obviously nettled to-day. The writer adds: “The crowd was chagrined over the doubles default. It is reported that Mako was suffeiing from a lame back. That might have been. However, Quist was far the better player.” In the final of the men’s doubles at the Maidstone tournament Riggs and Cooke beat Wood and Shields, 2-0, 10-S, 8-6, 6-4.
lu the second singles at Havane Jose Aguero (Cuba) beat Bruce Hall (Canada), 6-4, 6-0, 6-4. Mr. Harry Hopman (manager of the Australian team) told the Australian Associated Press that ho would have preferred a Canadian victory against Cuba, because Canada would have drawn a larger gate at Montreal. “We should win quito easily. The Cubans play wholly on hard courts and will not be at their best at Montreal on grass.”
