Pahiatua Women’s Institute

INTERESTING TALKS The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday last in tbo Wesley Hall. Airs. Clarke presided and apologies were received from Mesdamcs Austin, Tinney and Husband. After the singing of the Ode and the reading of the minutes, all members stood in silenco as a mark of respect to Airs. 11. Bick, who has recently suffered a bereavement. The Golden Thread talk was taken by Mrs. T. Clarke, who gave a most interesting account of the work of Dr. Grenfell, an English doctor who has devoted his life to tho care of the sick and needy in Labrador. There were two competitions for tho month—pikelets and the best bloom. The former was won by Airs. R. Taylor with Mcsdames Macrae and Vincent tying for second place. The best bloom was a petunia brought by Airs. P. Bisset, and tho second a sprig of japonica from Mrs. Cotter’s garden. An interesting and instructive talk was given by Sister Ward, of the Public Hospital. She spoke of burns and scalds and quoted many useful hints for their home treatment. After a short community sing, with Mrs. Alurch at the piano, Airs. Jennings briefly outlined the plans for an exhibition of handwork on August 29, to secure a suitable example of work to be sent to the Centennial Exhibition. As August is Federation month there will be a “bring and buy” stall at the monthly meeting and members are also requested to bring a mystery parcel to bo sold for sixpence. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdames Cotter, Murch and J. A. McDonald, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Airs. Vincent also extended the thanks of the members to Sister Ward for her helpful talk. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. RECORD ATTENDANCE AT AIANGAAIUTU W.I. On July 12 the Alangamutu Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting in the Alangamutu Hall. AJiss Taylor presided over a record attendance of members and visitors. Airs. Ebbett, of Alaltomako, kindly gave an item and Mrs. Clarke and Airs. Vincent rendered a sketch, “Lost Property.” Tho Alaugatainoka players also put on a play. These presentations were greatly appreciated and received long applause. Great amusement was caused when names of songs were given to each person and it was necessary for one to whistle or sing the name of the song given so as to find one's corresponding partner to dance tho “Grand Old Duke of Yorke.”

The “pairs” competition was won by Mrs. G. T. Waldcrman and the competition, the drawing of a “Cat,” was won by Airs. T. Burr. Airs. Jennings gave a most interesting talk on Institute work. The monthly competition, a decorated bowl of flowers, was won by Mrs. Heayns, with Mrs. AloncriefT second.

A dainty afternoon tea was served by tho committee members and a very happy and pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
