WAIRARAPA BEAT POVERTY BAY Per Press Association. CARTERTON, July 22. Wairarapa met Poverty Bay in fine football weather but the play was for the great part dull and uninteresting. Wairarapa’s first score came.from Williams, who started a brilliant back movement, Burton cutting in and making a fine opening for Peterson to score. Brunton goaled. Poverty Bay ran play to tho Wairarapa territory where a free kick saw O ’Brien goal. Play returned to tho Bay end where Brunton piloted a free kick over the bar. Almost immediately afterwards a Bay player was caught playing tlio*ball on the ground right in front of the posts and Brunton easily goaled, making the score at half-time Wairarapa 11, Poverty Bay 3. The second spell opened drably. Wairarapa had the better back line and better forwards in the loose but they failed to take advantage of it, keeping play tight. The heavy Bay forwards showed up well here. With the play well towards the Bay line, the ball was kicked through and Percy, apparently from offside, rushed up to score. Brunton failed.

O’Brien for Bay had three shots at goal, all missing. Both teams crossed the line several times but forces ensued, and the final score came from a pretty passing movement when Denbee passed to Petersen, who gave the scissors pass to Howard, who scored near the posts. Brunton failed and tho game ended Wairarapa 17, Poverty Bay 3. Afr. H. Mason was the referee. NORTH OTAGO BEAT SOUTH CANTERBURY Per Press Association. OAMARU, July 22. In a bright display of Rugby North Otago defeated South Canterbury by 17 points to 11, and the features of the game were the hard forward play and good passing by the North Otago backs. Tho winners’ score came from tries by McCabe, Depree and Brown, two penalties and one conversion by Easfon. South Canterbury’s scorers were Parsons (two tries), Morrison (penalty goal) and Murphy (conversion). For the first time for many years North Otago juniors defeated South Canterbury juniors 9—6. SOUTHLAND SUB-UNIONS BEAT OTAGO TEAM TO DEFEND RANFURLY SHIELD Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, July 23. INTER-SCHOOL FOOTBALL WAITAKI—TIMARU Per Press Association. TIMARU, July 22. The annual matches between the Timaru and Waitaki Boys’ High Schools were played to-day. The senior game was drawn, eight all, and the junior game was won by Timaru 18 to 13. The Waitaki seniors were superior in the scrums and their backs were having a feast of the ball, but the Timaru defence was very sound. In the junior game there was an exciting second half, Waitaki leading 13 to 12 within five minutes of time.
