Old Boys Defeat United

Rugby Competitions Well Advanced

Continuing their winning career in the second round of the senior Bug by football championship, University on Saturday secured a very convincing win against St. Patrick's by 24 points to nil. By no means so one-sided an encounter, the game between Old Boys and United resulted in a win for Old Boys by eight points to sis. At Peilding, Peilding Old Boys defeated the Peilding fifteen by 12 points to three. Kia Toa, who had the bye, played a visiting Masterton team, and were victorious. Kia Toa juniors and St. Pat’s thirds, by again securing wins, placed themselves in unassailable positions in their respective competitions.

the twenty-five, where St. Put’s were awarded a penalty.

Madgwick, coming from behind a scrum, sent Powell and Hunt deep into 'Varsity territory. Powell unsuccessfuly tried to force his way over and the St. Pat’s forwards were held right on the line before 'Varsity worked clear of trouble.

Bennett, Stewart, Guild and Mitchell handled in an attack which took the ball to St. Pat’s territory. Mitchell sent the forwards away, McLaren, Seeley and Thurston handling before the last-mentioned scored. McLaren s kick missed. 'Varsity 16, St. Pat’s 0.

Soon after the 'Varsity backs were away again, Little sending Guild and Stewart away, the latter racing 30 yards to score. Terry converted. 'Varsity 21, St. Pat’s 0. A willing rush by the St. Pat’s pack rattled into the 'Varsity twenty-five, where Green was hurt. 'Varsity relieved momentarily, but Powell and Raisin took the ball back. Awarded a penalty kick, Powell missed. Green was replaced by Johnston. St. Pat’s Almost Score

After a period in tho second spell when 'Varsity made most of the attacking and a fair pace was maintained, Powell carried the ball into the 'Varsity twenty-five, where Bt. Pat’s infringed. Bt. Pat’s forwards drove 'Varsity back to tho line, however, where the teams rucked and ’Varsity infringed in a scrum. From near the side-line, Powell’s penalty kick missed by a very small margin. Intercepting a pass in 'Varsity territory, Btewart raced a way to the St. Pat's twenty-five, passed the ball back by short punting and gathering in the ball on the full and, when tackled, sent his forwards within a yard or two of scoring. A drop-out resulted. Guild sent Little sprinting down the side-line, but an in-pass resulted in a knock-on. Powell and Hunt led a rush to within five yards of the 'Varsity line. Bt. Pat's infringed. Guild and Petersen, the latter handling a difficult pass well, took play quickly back to St. Pat’s territory. 'Varsity forwards took the ball to the line, but could not force their way over. Picking up a rolling ball and quickly changing his direction, Mitchell sprinted down the side-line until, though momentarily held up, he swung the ball across for a try. Terry’s kick missed. 'Varsity 24, Bt. Pat’s 0. Starting in their own twenty-five, Blackley sent Guild and Little away, tho latter stepping a shade into toueh before crossing the line. Goodall broke clear of the field in the Bt. Pat’s twenty-five and with a clear paddock ahead ran to half-way, where he was overtaken and collared by Stewart. The Teams The teams lined out as follow: University: Blackley; Little, Guild, Mitchell; Btewart, Petersen; Bennett; Green, McKee, Gray; Seeley, McLaren, Terry, Thurston; Carter. Bt. Patrick’s: Richards; Fitzpatrick, Goodall, Bentley; Cameron, C. Hehir; Madgwick; Morgan, Hunt, McCashin; Raisin, Ross, Powell, Anderson; Webb. Mr. J. Burgess was the referee. JUST ABOUT EVEN OLD BOYS AND UNITED Possibly a more attractive game than tho main fixture of the afternoon, the encounter between United and Old Boys saw honours fairly evenly divided, for success might have as easily gone in the opposite direction. Playing one of their best games of the season and their backs accounting for themselves very well, United fought every inch of the game and were unlucky to be beaten by eight points to their six. Tho Old Boys backs were more subdued than usual, perhaps because they did not get as much of the ball as suited them and because their inside backs were given so little room in which to work. However, it was a game of surprises, the unexpected happening more often than not. Probably ono of the outstanding players on the field was Buick, the Old Boys full-back, who played his best game yet in that position. He was not absolutely faultless, but he handled cleanly, kicked with accuracy and evaded being collared even when in a tight corner. There was nothing wrong with the play of the other full-back, Hughes, who was also in good form, but Buick appeared to be the sounder of the two. Although Old Boys’ wingers, Reid and Howell, made good runs, and Irvine did good work behind tho scrum, United’s backs quite often gained the upper hand—an unexpected feature of the game. Kingsbeer, the centre, broke clean through the Old Boys’ back line, making openings for the wingers, Hyde and Coley, advantages which were not always turned to profit, however. Nevertheless a considerable part of the game was contested by the forwards, both packs showing willingness which ut times reached the point of serappiness. Among the best packmen were Porter, Bhand, O’Dea and Fleming (Old Boys) and Dustin, Pike and Birchall (United). A hardy little toiler was the United half, Bradley. Field Quickly Traversed Feilding the ball close to the line, Howell ran quickly through to the United twenty-five and kicked midfield, where the teams rucked. Reid nearly broke through with the ball at

Fourth Grade United 12 points, Kia Toa 10, High School 8, Feilding A.H.S. C. OUTPLAYED IN ALL DEPARTMENTS ST. PAT’S FAIL AGAINST ’VARSITY Outplaying St. Pat’s in every department in one / of the most one-sided matches of the season, University won their fifth successive game of the second round of the competition by 24 points to nil. It was rather an extraordinary encounter. Starting off at top pace, University scored 13 points in the first quarter of an hour and 21 points in the first spell, and then the game slumped, becoming as uninteresting in the second spell as it was brilliant in the first. In practically the last ten minutes, ’Varsity secured the only score during the latter half of the game. With a heavier pack of very fit forwards, Seeley, McLaren, Terry and Carter prominent, and good work behind the scrum by the half-back, Bennett, University relied mainly on the speed of their three-quarter line, Little, Guild and Mitchell, for their scoring movements. The speedy wingers, Mitchell and Little, were seen at their best as the result of the excellent opportunities provided them by the centre, Guild. Stewart, the second five-eighth, made a number of brilliant openings and not infrequently transformed a defensive move into a dangerous attack. He played a game well up to representative standards. Blackley, tho fullback, was most satisfactory, and there appeared to be no weak link in the team.

Although as well beaten as the score indicated, St. Pat’s did on occasions gain a good deal of ground, their forwards, led by Powell and Hunt and well supported by the half-back, Madgwick (who evidently plays in all positions), driving ’Varsity deep into their twentyfive, where hard rucking was seen. Powell was among the best forwards on the field. Profiting by occasional slips in the ’Varsity open play, St. Pat’s gave a far better account of themselves in the second spell, but even then were beaten by a greater margin than the three points scored against them would indicate. The First 13 Points Stewart and Guild tried to set the 'Varsity backs away, but it was the forwards who worked through to the St. Pat’s twenty-five, where Seeley broke free from a ruck and dived over to score. McLaren’s kick missed bv inches. ’Varsity 3, St. Pat’s 0. Stewart and Guild both cut through, sending Mitchell away unopposed for a try behind the posts. McLaren converted. ’Varsity 8, Bt. Pat’- 0. • Immediately afterwards Terry broke away from mid-field, and transferred to Seeley, who scored. McLaren converted. 'Varsity 13, Bt. Pat’s 0. Thirteen points had been scored in about as many minutes.

Bt. Pat’s forwards forced their way quickly to the 'Varsity twenty-five, and there infringed. Bennett sent Mitchell along the sideline. Challenged by Richards, Uitchefi short-jabbed and regained the ball, only to lose it again, and tho teams rucked right in the corner, a series of line-outs and scrums taking place before 'Varsity had to concede territory back to

his feet, Hughes saving in the nick of time, and a scrum was formed on the United line. Holland cleared to the twenty-five, and United tried to force their way into Old Boys’ territory, Buick’s defence being called upon. The United pack went deep into the Old Boys twenty-five, and a drop-out resulted. Kingsbeer made a fine solo run through to the Old Boys twenty-five and tried to transfer to Hyde, who played the ball with his foot and went within five yards of scoring, but Reid gained possession and cleared. Birchall dribbled from half-way to the Old Boys twenty-live and gave Buick no chance of clearing and he stepped into touch. From a scrum on the Old Boys line, the bail was kicked mid-field, but Hughes gathered it in and sent the United three-quarters away, Hyde going through to the line, only to bo brought back for a minor infringeThe game went to the United twentyfive and Old Boys' backs broke through, Turnbull making the opening to send O’Dea across for a score. Buick converted. Old Boys 5, United 0. Unusual Incident Birchall kicked for touch from close on the Old Boys twenty-five and the players stopped where they were, expecting it to go out. The ball, however, landed a foot inside and rolled over the goal-line. Buick and Birchall raced for the ball, but the latter got their first and scored, and Wards’ kick missed. Old Boys 5, United 3. With a 50-yard punt Ward returned United to the Old Boys twenty-five, where the spell ended. Breaking through an Old Boys backline movement, Barker took the ball to the twenty-five, supported by Holland, but there a knock-on resulted. Dustin dribbled the ball from half-way to the Old Boys twenty-five again, where Lang came round from behind a scrum and ran to half-way, the movement going on to the United twenty-five. The Old Boys forwards worked their way through to the corner, where Shand scored. Buick’s kick was too short. Old Boys 8, United 3. Tho teams lined out close to tho Old Boys line and United tried strenuously to force their way over. Buick first tried unsuccessful to clear, but United’s backs gained possession and very nearly scored. Buick then snatched the ball, and, racing down to his twenty-five, kicked to the United twenty-five, where Hughes accepted and kicked back to half-way. Buick’s move gained half the field. Bradley squirmed through to the Old Boys twenty-five, where he sent the ball out to Holland, whose kick found touch deep in the Old Boys twenty-five, but tho advantage was not long held, Old Boys’ forwards going back to half-way, where Reid got away at top pace, driving his way straight up the side-line to within 15 yards of the line, where he transferred to a forward, the latter being forced out by the flag. United held a slight territorial advantage and Kingsbeer cut through cleverly, but his pass to Coley, who had practically a clear run, was not accepted. United were penalised close to the twenty-five, near the side-line, and the kick placed Old Boys handily close to the goal-line, where me forwards worked willingly. Lang was hurt, being replaced by McNeile. Old Boys drove United back for a force-down, then lost ground, Birchall taking the ball to Old Boys’ twentyfive and Bradley chasing the ball across the line, a drop-out resulting. The United backs came again, however, Holland and Kinggbeer sending Coley across for a try near the corner. Wards’ kick failed. Old Boys 8, United 6. The Teams The teams lined out as follow: Old Boys: Buick; Reid, Turnbull, Howell; Laug, Hill; Irvine; Waldegrave, Lewin, Porter; Fleming, O’Dea. Fell, Annear; Shand. United: Hughes; Hyde, Kingsbeer, Coley; Holland, Barker; Bradley; Bovis, Pike, Luxmoore; Adamson, Dustin, Edwards, Birchall; Ward. Mr. C. Eglinton was the referee. KIA TOA v.
