KUMEROA-HOPELANDS The July meeting was held on Wednesday last, when Mrs. J. O’Neil presided in the absence of the president over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdaines Norman, Miller, Mackay, Hills, Hutchins and Oxenham. Mrs. Mabey read the motto for the day. The roll-call, “My favourite occupation for a wet day,” brought forth some entertaining ideas. Competitions resulted: Jar of berries and foliage, Mrs. C. Mackie I, Mrs. I. Mackay 2; best bloom in the garden, Mrs. Sinclair and Mrs. Mackie equal I, Miss_P. Lynch 2. Mrs. Anderson, of Dannevirke, gave a most interesting demonstration on making rubber door mats and wool mops, all of the members taking a very keen interest in it. Mrs. Bryant, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs. Anderson for her useful and splendid demonstration. Mrs. C'ranfield and Miss Lynch served a dainty afternoon tea. WHAKARONGO A cosy room and a bright fire added to the comfort of members at the July meeting, a good number being present. Mrs. Oxenham (president) welcomed Mrs. Eliott and Mrs. Lancaster as visitors. Apologies were received from Mesdames Ryan, Wood and Bullock. The president also welcomed back Mrs. Copliu, who had been absent for some time owing to illness. The thought fox the month was “Ever practise charity” and the roll-call “Kitchen don’ts. ” Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Johansen were elected to attend the group meeting at Messrs. Collinson and Cunningham’s. On August 1 a meeting will be held at 1.30 p.m. to draw up the schedule for the next show, and any suggestions from members will be glad ly received. The golden thread talks for tho month, which were given by Mrs. P. Philips and Misft W. Yautier, very interesting. A very instruct
tive talk on “The Girl Guide Movement” was given by Mrs. G. A. Eliott, of Palmerston North. Reports on the gardening, arts and crafts, and diama circles were given by Mesdames Urh* bom, Meyer and Frith respectively. At the next gardening circle meeting a talk will be given on gladioli and the competition will be for a 0-inch tight posy. Competitions results: Best bloom, Mrs. Askew 1, Mesdames Speedy and Urhbom 2, Mesdames Eagle and dark 2 (married ladies). Misses W. Ynutier and H. Wood 3, Misses 8. .Speedy and Parks 2, Miss O. Uhrbom 3 (single ladies); bnby’s knitted singlet, Mrs. F. .Smith 3, Mrs. Morgan 2, Mrs. Harrowfield 3 (married), Miss R. Parkes J, Miss W. Yautier 2, Miss M. Speedy 2 (single). A bring and buy stall to raise funds to send to the federation will be held next month and all members are urged to help in this matter. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Johan seu, Tafeita, Clark and Miss 8. -Speedy. The roll-call for next month is “The usee of salt” and the competition for the best ironed table cloth. The hostesses will be Mesdames Lynch, Harrowfield, Misses M. Speedy and L. Jordan.
