From Our Own Correspondent. The annual Foreign Mission appeal was commenced In Maklno this week, when the Sunday afternoon service at the Methodist Church was conducted by Rev A. H. Scrivin, of Auckland, general secretary of the Board of Missions. Mr. Scrivin spoke of the work in Papua, British New Guinea, where he did missionary work for 18 years, and told many Interesting stories of the life of the missionai*es there and in the Solomon Islands. Mrs. A. Humphries presided at the organ. On Tuesday evening Rev. C. Eaton, of St. Paul’s Church, Palmerston North, accompanied by a party of artists, gave an enjoyable entertainment in the Public Hall. Mr. C. E. Taylor, of Feiiding. occupied the chair until the arrival o: Rev. J. H. Allen. Mr. Eaton gave a most Intersting talk on missionary work. He spoke of the great missionary work being done in China and the influence this work Was having on a war-stricken nation. In many ways he showed how closely he h been kept in touch with this work through the letters received v from his son. the late Dr. Eaton, who so recently lost bLs life in such tragic circumstances while engaged In his work as medical doctor in a missionary hospital there. On Wednesday night the hall committee staged a most enjoyable dance, when a good gathering of young people assem bled to enjoy dancing to excellent music supplied by a professional Feildlnr orchestra. The ladies’ committee had decorated the hall with vases and bowls of Iceland poppies, and with a large lor fire burning brightly the hall proved ver.' attractive. Novelty dances were h*» 1 ar# won as follows: Monte Carlo, Mrs. w Simpson and Mr. B. Thurston* statue walt2, Mr. and Mrs. R. Guthrie. Mrs- 1 R. Simpson contributed extras and Mr. Roberts made an efficient M.C. Mr. and Mrs. Mockley, of Palmerston North, have been visitors to Maklno were the guests of their daughter, M 4. Lassen.
