SIR LIONEL HALSEY? Commanded H.M.S. Nev/ Zealand in 1913 By this time next year New Zealand will have another GovernorGeneral, and Lord Galway has already begun his farewell visits, says a writer in the London Daily Telegraph. His successor may possibly be a New Zealander, although I understand that this Is not very likely. If the new Governor-General comes from this country he may well be a sailor again. Lord Jellicoe was succeeded by Sir Charles Fergusson, a soldier, and by Lord Bledisloe, a farmer. Lord Galway also is a soldier, so it is perhaps the Navy’s turn again. A very popular choice would be admiral Sir Lionel Halsey, who commanded H.M.S. New Zealand on her cruise to the Dominion in 1913 and also visited the country with the then Prince of Wales (the Duke of Windsor), He stated recently that, but for the war, he would almost certainly have settled in New Zealand. Both he and Lady Halsey fell in love with the country when the admiral was stationed in Australian and New Zealand waters. Incidentally he is a keen fisherman. Sir Lionel, who is 67 years of age, was chief of staff to the Prince of Wales during his Canadian tour of 1919, his Australian and New Zealand tour of India and Japan in 1921-22. He commanded the Royal Australian Navy from 1918 to 1920. Sir Lionel commanded H.M.S. New Zealand during her Empire cruise in 1913, and during the action in Heligoland Bight in 1914 and at Dogger Bank in 1915, where he was again mentioned in dispatches. He served in H.M.S. Iron Duke at Jutland as Commodore Ist. Class and Captain of the Fleet He was Third Sea Lord in 1917-18 In 1905 he married Miss Morwenna Garnville, youngest daughter of the late Major Bevil Granville.
