Young Farmers’ Day

DOG TRIALS HELD GOOD PERFORMANCE BY LOCAL DOGS Eight entries came forward for a dog trial event organised by the Woodville Young Farmers' Club and held on tho Woodville racecourse on Saturday. Tho standard of performance was very gratifying, the placed dogs working excellently. It was regretted, however, that all the entries were local, tho day apparently being unsuitable to neighbouring clubs. The result of the short head event was as follows:—W. D. Toogood's Nellie, 55J points, J; R. Smith's Sharp, 49, 2; A. Fountaine's Mark, 47, 3. Air. J. S. Tait, Tataramoa, Danne- , virke, was tho judge, and later he gave a short lecture and a four-dog demonstration, showing wonderful skill in controlling the animals. His remarks wero supplemented instructively by Mr. A. F. Curry. The prizes were presented by Mr. W. Smyth, president of the Kumeroa-Hope-lands Dog Trial Club. Mr. J. Murray senr. and Air. M. D. Murray gave trophies in addition to the cup donated by the club. A competition judging of a pen of Southdown sheep was also held, the young farmers' decisions being adjudicated by Mr. C. Swift, whose placing was as follows:—-A. Compton 1, B. j Fountain 2, L. McKay 3. Tho proposal | to judge crossbred hoggets also was not carried out.

Mr. Swift also gave an interesting demonstration on Southdown sheep. An apology was received for the absence of the Young Farmers’ Club chairman, Mr. H. G. Goldsworthy.
