Impressive Display Against United

United forwards swarmed through close to the 'Varsity line, where the teams rucked, and several United thrusts fell short before Stewart gained possession and cleared. Findlay made & fine run deep into the 'Varsity twenty-five, but United slowly lost ground and Hughes had to defend. From a scrum 30 yards deep in 'Varsity territory, Stewart sent Mitchell away at a tremendous pace and ho fended off tackles, and went right through for a score. McLaren's kick missed. 'Varsity 14, United 0. United Score The United half-back, Bradley, broke through brilliantly to tho 'Varsity twenty-five but, instead of going on on his own, tried to pass out to Dustin, and the ball was lost. Guild broke through again and tried to send in a pass, but Hughes intercepted the ball and kicked. United rorwards broke through, Findlay handling magnificently before sending Birchall across in the corner. Ward converted with a long kick from almost right on the sideline. 'Varsity 14, United 5. After some exchanges by tho fullbacks, Hughes and Stewart, the United pack, led by Dustin, swept through close to the 'Varsity line, where Stewart scooped up the ball from their feet and cleared. Terry led a dibbling rush to the United line, where the teams rucked. 'Varsity were awarded a penalty kick in an easy position. Terry scored. 'Varsity 17, United 5. Little's Speed

From half-way, Stewart sent Little away on a long sprint down the sideline. He evaded two tackles and scored. Terry’s kick missed. ’Varsity 20, United 5.

Stewart took a penalty kick from rather a difficult angle, and the ball rebounded from the post. Ward attempted a'penalty from well out, but the ball passed outside the posts. Guild cut through again, passed on to the full-back, Stewart, who transferred to Little, who outpaced all opposition to score. Terry’s kick failed. ’Varsity 23, United 5.

UNIVERSITY A STRONG TEAM OUTCLASS UNITED IN FAST GAME Playing a game that promised well for their encounter with Canterbury Agricultural College (Lincoln) next Wednesday, University defeated United by 23 points to five. Although outclassed by the strongest team in Manawatu, United put up a plucky show and their forwards did not let up once during the game. Little, ’Varsity speedy wing threequarter, was responsible for the most attractive score of the game. He opened the ’Varsity account with a beautiful try after receiving the ball on the bounce near mid-field and, with half the United team between him and the goalline, weaving his way between the players. Guild, ’Varsity centre, played one of his best games, time and again cutting out his opponent and sending the fleet-footed wing three-quarter, Mitchell, away for a try. Mitchell was almost impossible to stop when he had gathered speed. .Stewart, ’Varsity full back, did not find enough work to keep him occupied at full-back, so Jinked up with the backs, standing in between the halfback and wing when there was a scrum close to the side line and sending the wing away on the blind side, or else linking up between the centre and wing to provide the extra man that made the overlap which was responsible for more than one of the College scores. Another attractive feature of Stewart’s play was the power of his punting. He certainly displayed his versatility during

The identical movement was repeated by the same men, Little again crossing, but they were brought back for a minor infringement. 1 The Teams The teams lined out as follow: University: Stewart, Mitchell, Guild, Little, McCracken, Petersen, Bennett, Green, McKee, Wallace, Craven, McLaren, Terry, Gray, Seeley. United: Hughes, Coley, Meade, Hyde, Holland, Barker, Bradley, Ward, Findlay, Dustin, Edwards, Birchall Adamson, Pike, Bovis. Mr. C. Taylor was the referee. OLD BOYS DOMINATE FIRST SPELL ST. PAT’S LACK CUSTOMARY DA-SH For the first half of the game with Old Boys, St. Patrick’s gave a disappointing display, allowing Old Boys to keep the game out of their territory practically all the time and score with no great difficulty fivo unconverted tries. At a later stago of the game St. Bat’s played with more purpose and began to reduce the margin of points against them, but another try by Old Boys towards the end of the game put the result beyond doubt, the final score being: Old Boys 18, St. Pat’s 11. Turnbull, promoted from the ranks of Old Boys’ junior fifteen, played well at centre, handling the ball well and taking part in almost all the scoring movements, but, with the exception of *’arson, who cut in frequently, Old Boys’ inside backs gave little evidence of incisive play, passing the ball across field to the wingers, McNeilo and Howell. McNeile showed ‘unexpected speed on the wing and gave a promising exhibition in that position, being usually a five-eighth. Howell gave his j usual sound exhibition, playing with .determination—he plays excellent football for an 18-year-old. Buick played at full-back and as centre and gave a better account of himself in the latter position, although quite a sound fullback and strong on defence. Old Boys greatly lacked a player able to placekick. St. Pat’s came to life in the second spell, Hehir in particular playing with (more dash and penetration, and Hunt, Powell and Morgan working very well 'among the forwards. Five Unconverted Tries | After two or three minutes’ play Old • Boys sen-t the ball sailing along their I back-line from a line-out in St. Pat’s territory and McNeile, on the left : wing, made a good 50-yard run to score in the corner. Buick failed to convert. Old Boys 3, St. Pat’s 0. Old Boys drovo St. Pat’s close to their goal-line. Buick missed with a penalty kick. Carson, second fiveeighth, cut through and sent on to the centre, Turnbull, and the winger, McNeile, who scored. Buick missed the kick. Old Bovs G, St. Tat’s 0.

the game. Although his passes were occasionally rather too liigfi, Bennett, the 'Varsity half-back, did great work behind the scrum, playing with any amount of courage. This feature also marked the play of the opposing halfback, Bradley, who must be pretty tough. Hughes at full-back for United, ■was outstanding. Very occasionally he dropped the ball and, despite gallant attempts, missed Mitchell and Little, but most of the time his handling and line-kicking was little short of brilliant. The United forwards were stronger than their backs and several times succeeded in breaking through the heavier 'Varsity pack. Findlay and Dustin wero outstanding, and Ward, Edwards, Birchall and I'iko were also prominent among an eager pack, against which, hbwever, no small number of penalties was awarded. The 'Varsity pack was an even bunch, and Craven was responsible for some good work in the loose. Mitchell’s Three Successive Tries Mitchell sent 'Varsity to the United twenty-five and the ball was kicked across to Little, on the opposite wing, who was standing about 35 yards out. He dodged and side-stepped right through to a score. Terry’', kick missed. 'Varsity 3, United 6. 'Varsity sped away again, Guild, centre, cutting through and sending Mitchell away on a brilliant sprint to
