Oroua Federation of Women’s Institutes

A meeting of the federation executive was held in Feilding at tho Community Centre. Mrs. W. G. Short presided over a full attendance of members, those present being Mesdames H. Barnicoat (hon. secretary-treasurer), A. AlcCorkindalo, R. H. Guthrie, Gregory, A. K. Drew, J. Thompson, Baker, C, M. Stanley and Miss Bridgman. Correspondence dealt with showed that several institutes were able to present a favourable response to the federation’s appeal for a register of those able to help in various directions in case of a national call for service. Affiliation fees were received from Rangiwahia, £2 17; Stan way, £2 ss; Table Flat, Iss; Bulls, £5; Makino, £2 I8s; Utuwai, £1 13s. Donation to federation: Table Flat, ss; Stanway, 10s; Apiti, £1 Is. Donations to Dominion federation: Table Flat, ss; Stan way, 10s. Donation , to Maori development fund: Apiti, 10s. Mesdames W. G. Short and MeCorkindale were appointed delegate and associate member respectively to the National Council of Women (Manawatu branch), Mrs. McCorkindale to be acting-delegate in the event of the delegate ’s absence. Sanson reported that there would be at least 12 teams competing in their drama competition. Tho hope was expressed that some of them at least would be able to compote in the W.I. Drama Festival at a date in August to be arranged. Tho Hawera Maori team will present their play, “Tiki,” on tho final night of the festival. Mrs. A. K. Drew presented an excellent report on tho show, in so far as it concerned the women’s institutes. Stanway won a first and tho championship, Marton Junction was awarded a special prize. Mrs. McCorkindale spoke about “Home Helps” and stated that all federations were at liberty to formulate their own plans for emergency

helps. It was decided to make an immediate start in the federation. NEWBURY At the June meeting Mrs. Shaw (president) extended a welcome to all present. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames J. Linklatcr, C. Cameron, C. Pain, H. Lovelock, Shearman, G. Gore and Miss Lynch. Mrs. Simpson (secretary and treasurer) reported on tho recent social and dance, the credit balance being quite satisfactory. Thanks were accorded Mrs. P. Death and Mr. J. Scrimshaw for their assistance at the social, and Mrs. Shaw thanked the ladies who were responsible for the work in connection with the window dressing display at the rocent Winter Show. Thanks were also due io Mr. F. Verry for placing his car at the institute’s disposal. Tho competition for a woollen tea cosy, knitted or crocheted, was won by Mrs. Healy, Mrs. J. Macauley being second and Mrs. Healey third; best bloom, Mrs. Shaw 1, Mrs. Healey 2, Mrs. Verry 3. A demonstration on Italian quilting by Mrs. Bromley, of Bulls, was very keenly followed, and some beautiful work was displayed. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Bromley. The members of the institute expressed their regret at the resignation of Mrs. Burberry, who has been with tho institute since its inception. Mrs. Burberry, who has resigned on account of leaving the district and making her future home at Marton, was asked to accept a small gift as a token of th© esteem in which she is held. Mrs. Burberry feelingly thanked everyone, saying she was sorry to be leaving the institute where she had spent many happy afternoons. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Lancaster and W. Penberthy. The competition for next month will be for a nut loaf made in a baking power tin and for the best flower. Tho hostesses for the July meeting will be Mesdames J. Lifiklater and Healey. NGAWAPURUA Mrs. Coulter presided over a fair attendance in June. Apologies were received from Mrs. and Miss Walther, Mrs. Judd, Mrs. Saunders, Mrs. and Miss I. Morgan. Mrs. Sinclair moved that £1 be sent for the Woodville Centennial Memorial Fund, and this was carried. Mrs. Coulter conveyed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Singers Tor managing the supper and also all others who helped to assist with the stage for the concert and dance. Mrs. Waugh thanked Mrs. Coulter for organising the concert. Miss M. Knapp volunteered to take charge of the sale stall for next month. Mrs. Horne gave a very interesting travel talk. Mrs. Mac Kay was the winner of tho jar of flowqrs, while Airs. Coulter won the best bloom in the garden; nut loaf, Miss M. Singers and Mrs. Singers equal 1, Airs. J. Pride 2, Mrs. Wade 3; cushion cover, Aliss Al. Knapp 1, Airs. Singers and Miss J. Walther 2 equal, Miss C. Knapp 3; soap, Aliss B. Clark 1, Airs. J. Singers 2, Aliss Al. Singers 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Airs. AlacKay, Airs. Knapp, Aliss Al. Singers and Aliss L. Knapp. A nursery competition was won by Aliss B. Clark.
