Free Hospital Service Begins To-day

SOCIAL SECURITY PROVISION Treatment in public hospitals throughout New Zealand Avill become free for in-patients with the introduction of the hospital benefits section of the Social Security Act to-day. In place of fees hospital boards Avill receive 6s a day for each person from the Social Security Fund, and private hospitals also are eligible to obtain this amount in partial satisfaction of the charges ordinarily payable by their patients.

Patients are liable for the full payment of fees incurred up to June 30. Patients applying at the institution of the Palmerston North Hospital Board for admission, except in cases of urgency, Avill be required to produce their social security contribution books. From an administrative point of view this is stated to be an essential condition, as particulars contained in the contribution books are required by the Hospital Board in making its claims on the fund.
