Hockey at Hokowhitu Park

SECOND WEEK OF COMPETITIONS The high standard that was attained in the previous week’s matches was well maintained at Hokowhitu Park on Saturday when the Manawatu Hockey Association’s competitions were continued before an enthusiastic attendance of spectators. The injuries thin week were not as numerous as those of the previous week-end despite the fact that the play was very fast. Among the Seniors. In the senior division Phoenix played Woodville on No. 1 ground and were successful after a hard-fought contest, by four goals to one. For Phoenix Tester, Donaldson (2) and Fisher goaled while J. Beales shot Woodville *s only point. The referees were Messrs. McLaughlin and Hartnell. The senior B grade games were as usual productive of attractive hockey, Woodville defeating United by four goals to three, and High School going down to Broadway by five goals to nil* In the former game R. Vowell (2), R. Seeker, and D. Brewer scored for Woodville and Olliver, Sullivan and Philp for United, w r hile in the latter match, Tborburn (2), Rama, Burrows and Ronberg goaled for Broadway. United were successful in their game at Massey College ground against ’Varsity by 7 goals to 1. A junior game between United and 'Varsity was also played at tbe college and this resulted in a win for the latter team by two goals to one. Tbe umpires were Messrs L. Martin and M. Levy. Junior Matches. Broadway juniors 3 beat Phoenix juniors 2, in an interesting game on No. 3 ground, the referees being Messrs. Philp and Winks. For Broadway Jones (2) *ind Hancock scored while for Phoenix the point-gatherers were Fairley and Burns. On No: 2 ground Woodville junior* lost to High School juniors by 3 goals to 5. Scorers for High School were Lvvle who shot 3 and Anderson 2 goals and for Woodville J. Hardy scored all the points. The referees were Messrs. Byers and Palenski. WOMEN’S HOCKEY SEASON COMMENCES BROADWAY BLUE WINS THE ELEVEN-A-BIDB The women’s hockey commenced at Takaro on Saturday with an eleven-a-side tourney. The ground was in good order and the weather ideal. The new club this year, St. Paul’s, made a very creditable showing and should develop into a really good team. Broadway Blue won the tourney with 5 points, Broadway Gold secured 4 points, High School Old Girls 2 points, and St. Paul’s I point. Messrs J. I’aton and V. Turner w ere umpires and Mr. R. Scales manager. The results were as follow: Broadway Gold 4 v. St. Paul’s 0. Broad way Blue 1 v. High School Old Girls 0. Broadway Gold 1 v. Broadway Blue 1* High School Old Girls 0 v. St. Paul’* C.
