Notes of the Day

Motor Camp Facilities J With the object of assisting towards the cost of improving the facilities at the Johnston Park motor camp, the Feilding Borough Council at its meeting on Thursday decided to subsidise the cost of installing gas at the camping ground up to the amount of £l2 10s. Community Centre Improvements With a view to falling in line with the proposed Community Centre improvements, the Feilding Borough Coun- ( cil decided at its meeting on Thursday , to recommend the Government Depart- j ments concerned to have the picket , fences surrounding the court house and , other Government offices removed. , Table Tennis Tournament An enjoyable evening is assured patrons of the Cheltenuam Ping-pong i Club’s opening tournament on Tuesday evening next, as advertised in this issue. Players from outside clubs will , be welcomed by the local club, while supper and a dance will follow the tournament. Road Improvement Loan Reporting on the proposed £6OOO road improvement loan at Thursday’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, the Alay or, Mr. T. L. Seddon, said that nothing had been linalised as to whether the council would bo able to obtain the benelit of the Government subsidised labour Scheme. The programme of work under the loan would be dependent on whether subsidised labour would be available. He was hoping for an early reply from the .Government on the subject. More Concrete Footpaths—Maybe At Thursday’s mooting of the Feilding Borough Council Cr. P. G. Guy expressed the hope that the council would be able to carry out additional concrete footpath work this year under the subsidised labour scheme. Replying, the mayor said that no provision was made for such work in the estimates and if Cr. Guy could show where the money was to come from he would be pleased to see what could be done. Meanwhile, he was not prepared to commit the council to any programme regarding footpath work, but if during the year the revenue became sufficiently buoyant it might be possible to undertake a little of this work. No “Ice-Breaking” “Keep-fit” enthusiasts endeavoured to prevail on Thursday evening’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council to have the Alunicipal Baths kept epen during the winter months, but the council was unable to concede the request, since such a step would mean the engagement of a caretaker. Cr. J*. G. Guy pleaded on behalf of those seeking this privilege but the Alayor, Air. T. L. Seddon, said that after giving the matter full consideration he could not recommend the council to agree. The council would have a responsibility in the matter and this would mean the engagement of a caretaker. The revenue from the few who would wish to avail themselves of a winter swim would not be sufficient to justify the cost, and he could not allow the baths open without some responsible person constantly in charge.
