Proposed Annuities For Mr. Lyons’ Family

OPPOSITION TO PROPOSAL United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. CANBERRA, May 11. The Federal Ministry’s Bin to provide annuities of £SOO a year to Dame Enid Lyons and her children, is to be amended substantially. The Ministry made this decision after it encountered unexpected trouble in the House of Representatives, when it introduced the Bill. When it became apparent that the Ministry would be defeated if it pressed the measure in its present form, at :he suggestion of Mr Menzies a committee, consisting of two members of sach party, reviewed the proposal. As i result of these deliberations, new proposals were placed before members )f the various parties, which will probibly result in the following arrangenent being accepted by the House:— An annuity on a sliding scale will be paid to the children until the youngest is 16 years, not 21 years, as proposed in the present Bill. The amount will fall by about £BS a year until when the youngest child reaches 16 It will disappear altogether.
