Dates for Shows

AVOIDING DUPLICATION Recommendations to be passed on to the Royal Agricultural Society for confirmation were arrived at, at a meeting in Palmerston North of presidents and secretaries from the A. and P. Associations in the area encompassed by Wanganui, Levin, Dannevirke and Masterton. The meeting was an informal one, and later in the day the Western District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society (Mr E. W. Barnett presiding) adopted the decisions ot' this meeting, which are to go forward for final confirmation by the Royal Agricultural Society Council, since the dates concern both eastern and western districts. These are:—Marton, January 1940; Horowhenua, January 26 and 27; Feilding, January 30 and 31; Woodville, February 3; Dannevirke, February 6 and 7; Pahiatua, February 10, Masterton, February 13 and 14. The meeting of the Western District Council, which was attended by representatives of several show associations in the area (by invitation) who are not members of the council, decided that in future, in the event of a threatened clash of show dates in the eastern and western districts, the secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society shall convene a conference of presidents and secretaries of the show associations concerned. A further decision was that show dates are to be submitted by the various associations on or before March 31 of each year, and that after the dates have been confirmed the Royai Agricultural Society 7 s secretary is to forward them to the New Zealand Racing Conference in an endeavour to avoid clashes between racing dates and show dates. Another resolution provided that a remit was to go forward to the Royal Agricultural .Society 7 s Conference in Wellington on July 6 to the effect that the Royal Agricultural Society shall re quest all the district councils to adopt this procedure, so that the complete list of approved show dates for New Zealand may be submitted to the New Zealand Racing Conference in an endeavour to avoid as far as possible the clashing of racing with show dates. This procedure had become very desirable in view of the increasing popularity of Saturday as a day on which to hold functions. In addition to Mr Barnett' there were present at the meeting of the Western District Council Messrs R. W. Marshall (Marton), Alex Hunter (Hawera), J. Batchelar (Palmerston North), J. Knight (Feilding), and H. Kissling (secretary. Apologies for absence from council members were received from Messrs 1L C. Sampson (New Plymouth), H. J. Lancaster (Horowhenua) aud R. (X Dairymple .(Bulls). Delegates from A. and P. Associations who were present by invitation were Messrs. G. M. Moffitt (Feilding), P. R. Welch and R. H. Williams (Masterton), E. McCay (Egmont, and secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society), A. R. Donaldson (Wanganui), R. J. Moore aud A. Way (Marton) and A. M. Colquhoun (Horowhenua).
