Hockey Affairs
MEETING Or EXECUTIVE LAST EVENING Mr. L. Martin (.chairman) presided at last evening’s special meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Hockey Association. Also present were Messrs. R. A. Brace (secretary), J. Galhchan, H. J. Eadc, K. N. Strothers, W. Gough and R. L. C. Aitchison On the motion of Mr. K. N. Strothers, seconded by Mr. R. L. C. Aitchison, it was decided to appoint Mr. VV. J. Fitzgerald sole selector for the association, subject to Mr. Fitzgerald’s acceptance of the position. As regards the city council’s proposal to include provision for the erection of shelters on sports grounds in the city, in this year’s estimates, the secretary reported that the town clerk, Mr. J. RHardie, had advised him that it would be unnecessary for the Hockey Association to send a deputation requesting the erection of shelters at Takaro and Hokowhitu Turks, as theso grounds would be provided for in the estimates. A motion was passed appointing Mr. K. N. Strothers to the insurance committce. On the motion of Mr. Aitchison, it was decided that the association take steps to confer with the local branch of the Social Security Department ou matters pertaining to the association s insurance scheme for injured players. Fixtures for Saturday The draw for the competition games to be played on Saturday is as follows: Senior A Grade Woodville v. Phoenix, Hokowhitu No.. 2, at 3 p.m. Umpires, Messrs McLachlan and Wilson. Varsity v. United, Massey College grounds, 3 p.m. Umpires, Messrs. Martin and Wilton. Broadway a bye. Senior B Grade Woodville v. United, Hokowhitu No. 2, 3 p.m. Umpires, Messrs. Sutton and D. Hoare. Broadway v. High School, Hokowhitu No. 2, 1.40 p.m. Umpires, Messrs. W. Sutton and H. Byers. * Junior Grade United v. Varsity, Massey College grounds. 1.45 p.m. Umpires, Messrs. Martin and Wilton. Woodville v. High School, Hokowhitu No. 3, 3 p.m. Umpires, Messrs. H. Byers and B. Palenski. Phoenix v. Broadway, Hokowhitu No. 3, 1.40 p.m. Umpires, Messrs. W. Philp and D. Hoare. Women’s Tourney A tourney will be conducted by the women players at Takaro Park on
Saturday commencing at 2 pm., to open the 1939 season The following is the draw:—
Broadway v. St. Paul's, 2 p.m. H.S.O.G. v. Broadway B, 2.30 p.m. Broadway A v. Broadway B, 2.45 p.m. H.S.O.G. v. St. Paul’s, 3.5 p.m. Broadway A v. H.5.0.G., 3.30 p.m. Broadway B v. St. Paul’s, 3.50 p.m. All games to be of two seven-minute spells, with one minute intervals. All teams to bo on the ground by 1.50 p.m. There will be two points for a win and one for a draw. The umpires will be Messrs. J. R. Paton and V. Turner, while tho manager of tho tourney will be Mr. R. Scales.
