Stud Stock for Australia

recent purchases Australia is still purchasing large numbers of New Zealand-bred sheep. This Australian interest has recently been intensified by reason of the splendid follow-up rains which have been experienced practically throughout the Commonwealth. Although orders are still being received by Ryeland, Romney and Southdown ewes, orders for numbers of ram lambs and also Border Leicester ram lambs have recently been executed by the stud stock department of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., for clients in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. South Africa also is placing further orders in New Zealand, these orders being ,for Corriedale and Romney Marsh stud and flock rams and stud mated ewes. This outside inquiry is doing much to stabilise the local stud stock values and, apart from these orders, there is very little movement within the Dominion. Detailed handlings of stud stock by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., for April are: —Ten stud Corriedale m.a. ewes mated ex Bushey Park to Western Australia, account Mr. W. S. Johnstone, Bushey Park, Palmerston South, to Mr. H. Floyd, Natal; 305 Southdown sheep, ex the* late Ellis Bros., Killeymoon dispersal sale, shipped to various clients. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., report holding in conjunction the third annual reduction sale of the 4 ‘ Glen Anga” Hereford herd, the property of Messrs. Tynan Bros., on May 2:— The sale was conducted in the Te Anga saleyards, situated 30 miles past the Waitomo Caves, on the direct road to Kawhia Harbour. After passing the Hostel an ascent is made to over 1500 ft., and then a run down to Anga, which is on a tiny flat surrounded by precipitous hills. Such country comprises Glen Anga, on which these well-known Herefords are bred. Messrs. Tynan Bros, have occupied this property for over 35 years, and the condition of the place and the cattle was a credit to their energy and ability. Perfect weather favoured the sale, and an excellent bench of buyers braved the dangers of the tortuous tracks to attend the lixture. One hundred and twelve head were offered, and a total clearance made at prices which, considering the seasonal conditions, were quite satisfactory.* The price for rising two-year-old stud bulls was 4l)gns., many of the offering of twenty of these bulls realising over 30gns. For run bulls the highest price was 30gns. The same purchaser, Mr. F. King, of Parapara, secured both top price animals. A noteworthy feature of the sale was the yarding of the yearling bulls which will comprise next season’s offering. These were all by Sherry Stanway (imp.), who was also on exhibition, and the young stock exhibited all the good points of the sire, being a particularly even line, with splendid bone and excel lent heads.
