Chess Club Play

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAY AND HANDICAPPING

The Woodville Chess Club held its weekly meeting on Tuesday evening when there was a good attendance. As an instructional evening the meeting was a great success. As the games progressed each move and its object was discussed.

The club is indebted to the Palmerston North Chess Club for the loan of the rules and charts for a system of handicapping. Handicapping in chess has always been a vexed question but this system has been scientifically designed to give nine grades of players an equal chance in any tournament. Hhe system also has the merit that it automatically promotes the improving player. This system has been adopted by the Woodville committee which will classify members very soon so that a tournament may be started next meeting night.
