A request was made to the Minister of Public Works, lion. R. Semple, by the Manawatu Oroua River Board yesterday that he should arrange for an Order-in-Council allowing the bank to lend the board an additional £I7OO in excess of the legal limit of £6OO, as it had not struck a general administrative rate for the year ended March 31, 1939, and could borrow only £6OO. It was proposed immediately to strike a general administrative rate to produce £1715 for tho current year for maintenance work. Mr. Semple said that he would do what he could to assist. He did not think there would bo any trouble. No general rate has been struck by the board since 1933.
