An interesting s unnnary of the data derived in analysing tho city’s housing survey statement was received by the Palmerston North City Council on Monday night from tho Director of Housing Construction. It was stated that dwellings numbered 5453 and the population (at the 1936 census) 22,550. Sub-standard units totalled 400, made up as follows: Private, 154; apartment, 182; boarding, 21; lodging, 13; combines, 36. Inmates occupying tho above 400 units numbered 1767, representing 7.83 per cent, of the population. Materials used in the construction of these dwellings were: Wood, 359; brick, 21; concrete, 26. Other data supplied by the director in connection with the sub-standard units was as follows: — Physical condition: Repairable, 253 (4.62 per cent.); repairs impracticable, 44 (.805 per cent.). Condition of dwelling units: Partly satisfactory, 214 (3.92 per cent,.); unsatisfactory, 156 (2.56 per cent.). Minimum accommodation: Sub standard, 218 (3.99 per cent.); surplus persons, 599$ (2.66). Overcrowding: Units, 115 (2.11 per cent.); surplus persons, 209 ( 93 per cent.). Number of irreparable units: Overcrowded, 20; surplus persons, 25; rented units, 335; average rent, ISs 9d.
