Increased Efficiency at Gasworks

BIG IMPROVEMENT IN MAKE PER TON OF COAL During the financial year ended on March 31 last, 104,353,000 cubic foot of gas were made at the Palmerston North gasworks, an increase of 7,267,000 cubic feet on the make for the previous year. With a substantial increase in the average make per ton of coal—from 17,911 cubic feet to 19,766 cubic feet—there was a decrease in the amount of coal used, 5278 tons being carbonised, as compared with 5505 tons in the previous year. West Coast coal accounted for 4198 tons and Newcastle for the balance. Other figures of interest from the annual report of tho manager (Mr. J. Learmonth) presented at Monday' night's meeting of the City Council were as follow (the figures in parentheses are thoso for tho provious year):—Coke sold, 1717 tons (1570tons); tar distilled, 43,236 gallons (39,991 gallons); oil distilled, 12,730 gallons 18,874 gallons); coal used under boilers, 493 tons (511 tons); coke used in producers, 1307 tons, (1361 tons).
