Drainage in the Manawatu
MEETING OF THE BOARD Present at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board were: Trustees W. E. Thomas (in the chair), P. G. Mildon, H. R. Green, J. Collis, F. J. Russell, R. Tanner and C. H. Prouse. Mr. H. J. Burrell, who owns land in Setter’s Line, waited on the board and asked it to inspect a portion of his property with a view to remedying trouble that occurred during floods. The board, after hearing what Mr. Burrell had to say, agreed to fix a date for an inspection of the locality. Mr. B. Zurcher, of Longburn, asked for an outlet into the Bunnythorpe drain, offering to contribute £lO and a floodgate. It was decided to make a grant to Mr. Zurcher of £l2 and allow him to carry out tho work himself to the satisfaction of the Drainage Board and the Kairanga County Council. Following on a report of the board’s visit to the lower end of the district, Trustee Tanner raised the question of putting a cut into Burke’s Drain to secure the money efficient removal of water, but it was left over in the meantime. Tho chairman and the overseer are to make inquiries regarding an electrical fence to keep stock out of Burke’s Drain. Tho overseer, Mr. M. Wilson, reported as follows on works carried out during the past month:— Improvement work: Work of removing silt, etc., from Burke’s drain is still being carried out and progress is being made. Approximately 55 chaius remain to complete this work to the junction. Fascine work in the Mangaoue Stream has been completed. The cleaning and improving of main drain is still being carried out and good piogress is being made. *
