Welcome Home Mrs. F. Webb and her son, Clive, of Kakariki, who recently returned from a trip to England, were the guests of honour on Monday evening at a welcome home party, arranged by tho settlers of the district. During the evening Mrs. Sparks presented Mrs. Webb with a crystal vase. Mr. Gordon Udy supplied tho music and the party concluded with “Auld Lang Syne.” Burnt by Caustic Soda An unforeseen accident with rather serious consequences befell Mrs. lan McKenzie, of Hamua, recently. A tin of caustic soda fell from a shelf and some of the scattering contents foil on her head. With her hands, which happened to be wet at the time, she brushed it, but the damp caused the caustic to become active and it burnt deeply into her scalp. Mrs. McKenzie is now an inmate of the Tararua Private Hospital, where she is receiving treatment. Business Men’s Luncheon On Wednesday next a special luncheon will take place for business men at the Commercial Hotel, Pahiatua, at 12.45 p.m. sharp. The Mayor, Mr. S. K. Siddells, has fortunately been able to arrange with Mr. Amos McKegg, of Palmerston North, to be the guest of honour. After the hincheon Mr. McKegg has kindly offered to exhibit and explain his all-colour films of his recent trip through America. Needless to say there is a treat in store and Mr. McKegg’s visit will bo thoroughly appreciated. Glare on the Horizon Late on Tuesday evening people returning home from the pictures were curious as to the very red glow in the sky towards the south and concluded that some unfortunate farmer was suffering from fire damage. Fortunately, the glow was caused through grass and scrub catching fire at Haunui, near Alfredton, where some hundreds of acres wero burnt with no damage to live stock or property. A similar glare was seen towards the south-west, and it has been ascertained that a fife also occurred in the Nircaha district.
