Obituary

MR. WILLIAM H. POWER, OF COLYTON For over half a century a settler of the Colyton district and one who enjoyed the esteem and respect of everyone, Mr. William Henry Power, a pioneer of that English stock which made for the development and progress of New Zealand, passed away on Monday night. For some time past the late Mr. Power was in failing health and his passing, while not entirely unexpected, came as a blow to his numerous friends. Born in London in 1858, Mr. Power came to New Zealand at an early age, residing first at Palmerston North and then taking up land in Colyton 51 years ago. For over half a century he had remained on the one place which he had fashioned out of the bush wilderness that then was Colyton. With a true pioneer love for the home no had created after trials not known to-aay, lie remained to see the district emerge from the embryo stage into the prosperous community it is now, and in that action Mr. Power played his full share. Although not taking any part in public affairs, Mr. Power was behind any move designed to advance Colyton or , the Feilding district, and as such proved himself a worthy settler, it is interesting to recall that when he went to Colyton the name of the district was Mangaone, but as there was another locality of the same name not tar away, tho postal authorities ashed for the name to bo changed, and Colyton was chosen, this being in remembrance of Colyton, Devon, from where many of the early settlers of tho district had come. A keen cricketer, Mr. L’owei did much for the game in Colyton all his life. Besides being a valuable playing member in his younger days, he followed the fortunes of the Colyton Club m the Feilding competitions right up to the end and was ever a familiar and welcome figure on Kowhai Park to all those playing. A staunch worshipper of the Anglican Church, he was a member of St. Andrew’s Church, Colyton, which contains pictures of Colyton, Devon, the name-sake of the local district. Predeceased about five years ago by his wife, Mr. Power leaves two sons, Messrs. Joseph, Taumarunui, and Willium, Colyton, and two daughters, 'Miss Power and Mrs. S. Everard, Colyton, to mourn the loss of a devoted father. MR. A. A. NEWELL, OF FEILDING The death took place at an early hour yesterday morning of Mr. Arthur Albert Newell, of 12 Queen street, Feilding. Born in Feilding 63 years ago, the late Mr. Newell was the fourth son of the late Charles and Mary Newell, late of Makino. The deceased gentleman has spent practically the w'holc of his life in the Feilding district and for a time farmed at Apiti, but owing to ill-health was compelled to retire and live with his brothers and sisters in Feilding. Of a quiet, retiring disposition, he will be missed by all who knew him and to his sisters and brothers will go out the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
