Advico lias been received from Masterton that Mr. W. T. Grundy, age I 86, for 27 years headmaster of the Clyde Quay School, Wellington, di-ed there Tuesday last. He is survived by hiß wife and a married daughter. The Rev. D. H. Hay, who has been Presbyterian minister at Dargaville for the past four years, is resigning as from the end of this month on account of ill-health, and will accept the smaller charge of Woodville for a year. Mr. J. C. Carpenter and Mr. J. Turner, two Australian pilots, have accepted positions with Union Airways, Limited. Until recently Mr. Carpenter was chief pilot for North Queensland Airways. Mr. J. Turner was with Guinea Airways in New Guinea and also flew that company’s aircraft on its Adelaide-Sydney and Adelaid'eDarwin services. It is announced that Mr. J. R. Herd, of Wellington, has been appointed Crown law officer in Samoa for the next three years. Mr. Herd has held positions ranging from that of a teacher of English in Sweden to that of secretary to a famous London theatrical producer. Accompanied by his wife and small son, Mr. Herd left Wellington by the Mauf Pomare for Samoa on Tuesday. Mr. H. C. R. Blackwood nas been promoted to the position of chief clerk in the State Fire Insurance office at Christchurch, where he will probably take up his duties before the end of the month, having' been chief clerk in the State Fire Insurance office at Palmerston North for five years. During practically the whole term of his residence at Palmerston North, where he is chairman of the local branch of the Public Service Association, Mr. Blackwood has been secretary of the Terrace End School Committee, atid his services will be greatly missed. Many friends will wish Mr. and Airs. Blackwood success in their new sphere. Mr. Blackwood came to this centre from Hamilton and is again succeeding Mr. A. W. Newton, whose position he took at Palmerston North, as Mr. Newton, who is president ,of the Christchurch branen of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, has been transferred on* promotion from chief clerk there to be branch manager at Invercargill,
