TALK ON MODERN LANGUAGES GIVEN The monthly meeting of the W.I. was held on Tuesday, Mrs. N. M. Burnett presiding over a good attendance. Several apologies for absence due to sickness were received, and four new mem bers were enrolled. Mesdames L. Hurley and H. McNeil were elected as delegates to the half-yearly federation meeting. On Saturday the annual husbands’ evening will be held in the hall when a good programme will be presented, followed by a dance. The competition for “best bloom” was won by Mrs. R. Hutching with Miss F. Dowsett second and Mrs. L. Hurley third. Miss Marnie, teacher of languages at the Dannevirke Secondary School, gave an interesting and educative talk on modern languages, the point being stressed that knowledge of languages is an aid to the understanding of other nations’ problems. The speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Health stamps were again on sale at the meeting and a street stall will be held on October 28 y the proceeds to be shared by the Plunket Society a«nd the health camp. The roll call was for first aid hints, some useful information being offered. Afternoon tea closed the meeting.
