Charm of English Lake District

REVEALED TO PALMERSTON NORTH AUDIENCE

The charm of the English lake district was revealed to a large Palmerston North audience in St. Andrew's Hall last evening by Mr. Alan C. Browne F.R.G.S., A.R.C.A., the well known artist, lecturer and traveller. Those who were privileged to hear him were taken on a ramble to many charming spots, tho beauties of which were portrayed per medium of camera slides. Many of these had been hand-coloured by Mr. Browne himself and he is recognised as no mean artist. As he explain ed some of the slides took as long as four hours to colour and as they measured about three inches square, the infinite care and patience displayed can well be imagined. Mr. Browne gave, in addition, a lucid lecture on the rock for which the lake district is renowned. Photographs on the screen again depicted the hazards of this pastime which the lecturer described as a mental as well as physical problem. The address concluded with a few slides selected from tho 120 Mr. Browne will show shortly in England, where he proposes to speak on the North Island of New Zealand and the Tasman glacier to British audiences. Finally, Mr. Browne threw on the screen four photographs taken by a colour process by the

late Mr. G. A. Gow, of Palmerston North. They revealed amazing artistry on the part of deceased as well as a truthfulness to natural colour.
