Young Farmers

TALK ON FARM PESTS The monthly meeting of the Ballance Young Farmers’ Club was held in the Ballance hall when there was a good attendance of members, Mr. W. Holdaway presiding. Mr. Lamont, fields instructor of the Department of Agriculture, Masterton, gave a very instructive J*nd interesting lecture and also showed lantern slides on common pests, dealing mainly with white butterfly, diamond back moth and grass grub. In the course of his remarks he mentioned the great amount of good done by the white butterfly parasite, and also made special mention as to the harm that the diamond back moth did; but through not being so conspicuous in a crop as the white butterfly, the white butterfly got a lot of blame for the damage done by this pest. Finally, Mr. Lamont dealt with the damage done by the grass grub, mentioning that a great number of experiments had been carried out as to how was the best way to get rid of this pest, but the only satisfactory way was to consolidate the surface of the ground so that the roots of tho grass would have greater strength and resistence to the grass grub menace. Feeding out on pasture affected was one method suggested by Mr. Lamont. After several questions were answered the chairman closed the meeting with a vote of thanks to Mr. Lamont.
