Deaths, drownings, prostrations and cessation of work by thousands marked the tenth day of a nationwide heat wave. Fourteen died in California and Arizona, where 111 degrees were recorded. Tho New York temperature of 83 degrees is an August record. There were four deaths, of which the strangest was that of Kenneth Kelly. He pushed the bed close to the window, tossed during the night, rolled out of the window and fell five storeys. The deaths to-day total 21. Thousands of Government employees were sent home, while four factories employing 7000 closed down. Relief workers demonstrated, demanding a larger ice issue. Police were rushed out to combat the crowd threatening to storm the Bronx pool, which was closed during the lunch hour. A continuation of heat is forecast.
