For Saving Lives in Shipwrecks

VOLUNTARY ORGANISATION FORMED IN AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, Aug. 3. Having as its main purpose the saving of lives in shipwrecks and other marine disasters off tho Dominion coast, a New Zealand Coast Guards (Auckland Division) —au entirely voluntary organisation—has been formed in the city. It is hoped at an early date to form similar divisions at the other chie ; ports of the Dominion. The foundation members of the Coast Guards are ex-members of the Auckland Sea Scouts Association, a body with similar aims, which has been disbanded. Membership of the Coast Guards will be limited aud, so that only the most suitable young men will be brought into the movement, aspir ants for membership will have to receive the nomination of two momoers and will have to undergo a probationary period of three months. Rocket apparatus in the keeping ot the Auckland Harbour Board has been placed at the Coast Guards ; disposal and the board has also signified its general support of the organisation Tho Coast Guards will receive instruc tion in the use of this apjiaratus ana training will also be given in such sub jects as seamanship, coastal navigation, signalling and first aid, so that the men may be qualified to meet any emergency that may arise.
