An intense anti-cyclone located over south-eastern Australia is moving on to the Tasman and extends towards southern New Zealand. Winds: Moderate to strong southwesterlies in the far north; elsewhere east to south prevailing, strong in the central provinces and reaching gale force in Cook Strait. Light to moderate in the south. Seas (New Zealand waters): Becoming rather rough to rough north of Farewell Spit and between Banks Peninsula and East Cape; elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong southerly winds and rough seas, but conditions moderating from the west. Weather: Fair to fine in the western district of the South Island. Cloudy to overcast about and north of Cook Strait with intermittent rain. Some scattered showers also in eastern districts of the South Island. Temperatures very cold with snow on the high levels.
