The Local Butter Market

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I have received a circular letter signed by the chairman of directors cf four dairy companies operating in the Manawatu. These gentlemen are evidently endeavouring to persuade their suppliers that the Government is doing something very unjust to the companies concerned and is giving Awahuii an unfair advantage. Why did these four companies neglect the local market and leave it to Awahuri to supply the local trade? I have heard the directors of some of the companies concerned say that the local market was not worth bothering with, and now when a rival company builds up a business these people want the Government to make them share it up, and these chairmen are mostly, if not all, strongly opposed to Government interference. What n silly gag to talk about second-hand boxes for local sales and new ones for export. That has always been the case, so it is not a new development. The real cause of the trouble is election year and it is a bit of pre-election propaganda. I think they will have theif work cut out to persuade the farmers to go back to the rafferty rules under the old Government, as I for one can say I am better off in every way and my costs have gone down and not up in spite of what the Nationalists say.— I am, etc., G. I. LOWE. Kopane, Aug. 4.
