Shield Challenges

OTAGO’S ATTITUDE IS UNALTERE MANAWATU MATCH Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Aug. 4. Otago’s attitude concerning Manawatu s Ranfurly Shield challenge was unaltered after a special meeting this morning, when It was decided to advise the New Zealand Union that Otago was prepared to meet Manawatu on the only available date. September 24. It was decided to send a special telegram to the union, pointing out that the representative fixtures for the season were already arranged; that August 13 was required for the final local cup club games; and that Otago played Canterbury on August 10 and protested against two shield games in a week. Mr. Harris said that Mr. Ongley. of Manawatu, had quoted the rule regarding the automatic transfer of challenges, but neglected to quote the latter part of the clause, which provided for mutual agreement on date or, failing this, a decision by the New Zealand council.
