AUCKLAND CONTINGENT LEAVE TOR ADDINGTON (Special to “Times.**) AUCKLAND, Last Night. F. J. Smith’s pacers, King’s Warrior, Ironside, Sandusky and Cavan Chief, and W. Clifton’s representative, Gold Dredge, were railed to Wellington today, en route to Addington, where they are freely engaged at the forthcoming meeting. While the Takinini horses are in good health, their preparation has been hampered somewhat with the bad weather and heavy tracks but it is expected they will benefit with racing. King’s Warrior, who races well at Addington, is likely to contest the National Challenge Stakes on the middle day and Ironside, whose form at the Juno meeting -was of a high order, is handily placed in the August Handicap. Except for a successful trip to Ha* wera two seasons ago, Gold Dredge has not raced outside the province. She is very consistent and on a dry track will race well, particularly at a mile and ahalf. If Cavan Chief travels all right, he will go a merry mile and a-quarter, while the consistent Sandusky is always likely to pay his expenses. Fernbrook Lass, who has been in C. H. Goodall’s Takanini stable, appeared to-day at Epsom, beingHransferred to L. Laver’s care. She looks very bright and in nice order for a preparation for the August Handicap. Pirate’s Last and Vanora, who was good money for L. J. Mahoney at the latter part of the season, continue to do well on training and they will be usefully placed at tho local fixture. Mahoney’s new arrival, Post Haste, has not been hoppled since coming to Epsom and he does not relish freelegged work on tho soft tracks.

KING’S GUARD ELECTROCUTED Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Niglit. The trotting gelding King’s Guard was electrocuted while walking into bis loosebox at the stables of his trainer. Mr. R. B. Berry, to-day. The horse rubbed against a switch as he entered the stall, and through a fault in the switch and the sodden state of the ground received a fatal shock. JOCKEYS’ PREMIERSHIP L. J. ELLIS ON TOP For the fourth timo in five years L. J. Ellis heads the list of winning jockeys in the 1937-38 season. Last year he had a long period of illness, which curtailed his activities. Even so, he rode 39 winners and during the past five years, since he succeeded K. Voitre in the premiership, he has had the winning mount in New Zealand on 075 occasions, the annual totals being 83, 93, 72, 39 and 89. Although L. J. Ellis has recaptured riding honours for the South Island in tho season concluded on Saturday, tne next eight on the list do most of their riding in the North Island. They are followed by three who are domiciled in the South. Details are as under:— L. J. Ellis S 3 C. G. Goulsbro .. .. .. .. 72 B. H. Morris 58 W. J. Broughton 51 S. Wilson .. .. 48 E. W. McTavish 38 P. Atkins .. •. .. •• •• * H. N. Wiggins 87 G. R. Tattersall 35 J. W. Jennings 33 M. Caddy 32 A. E. Ellis 28 R. E. Horne .. 27 C„ T. Wilson. 25 N. R. McKenzie 24 Easily tho most successful among the riders of jumpers was A. Jenkins, who rode a double at Riccarton on Saturday to bring his total to 23. These include a number of wins on the flat. Tho leading apprentice rider is G. R. Tattersall, who was also in that position in the previous term, although I then only 15th on the list. M. Caddy, [runner-up to Tattersall, and two places below him, has been riding very woll in recent months. CLARION CALL Clarion Call set the paco in the jHomeby Steeplecliaso and gave a briijliant display of fencing. On his display Clarion Call must take some beat- • ing in the Grand National Steeplechase. I« —“Sentinel” of tho Otago Daily Times.

Many systems have been introduced for the purpose of making a regular income from backing horses, but (says tho Star-Sun) the practice of selecting the most likely in the respective classes to add to their records has been found to be as profitable as any. The most important factors to be taken into consideration are dependability, capacity to go any distance, and the necessary breeding attributes and general physique to improve on past performances. A prisoner was being tried for larceny at Limerick Assizes. The case was a strong one, and the judge showed by his summing-up that he believed iu the prisoner’s guilt, but the jury gave tho man the benefit of the doubt and acquitted him. Whereupon tho judgo said: “Prisoner at tho bar, it would be a straining of language to describe your past career as creditable, but this most intelligent jury has been pleased to acquit you of the last crime laid to your charge, and you now leave this court without any additional stain on your character.”
