It is believed tho Japanese advance southwards from Kiukiang is aimed at Nanchang to facilitate tho cutting of the Hankow-Canton railway. Nanchang is already virtually deserted. The fleeing inhabitants are experiencing appalling hardships and arc perishing of starvation, exposure and disease. A Shanghai message states that the British Consul has protested against tho Japanese maltreatment of a British woman and tho British Constablo Hamlyn, who went to her aid when crossing the bridge to the International settlement. 20,000 TONS OF IRON COMMANDEEiTED FOR MUNITIONS JAPS STOP BUILDING OF DEPARTMENTAL STORES Received Midnight. TOKIO, August 1. The Government is preparing to buy for manufacture into munitions 20,000 tons of iron, made available owing to the compulsory stoppage of the construction of J 7 departmental stores. DESTROYER RACES TO RESCUE OF BRITISH SHIP THOUGHT SHE WAS ATTACKED BY PIRATES Received Monday, 9.20 p.m. HONG KONG, August 1. The British destroyer Delight has gone from Tsingtao to the assistance of the British steamer Saint Vincent do Paul, which is reported to have been attacked by pirates 100 miles northward of Tsingtao. A later message says the steamer was not molested. The scare arose through tho presence of a number of suspiciouslooking junks.
