Rotarian T. A. Daly, who is shortly moving to Auckland, forwarded his resignation to the Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday. Mr. Frank Graham has been appoint ed registrar of brands for the branding districts of Hawke’s Bay and Waipawa, according to the Gazette released last night. Mr. R. Gower, overseer of the stamp printing branch of the Government Printing Office, has retired after 40 years' service, 35 of which have been spent in the machine-room. Visitors to the Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday were: Messrs. K. G. Biss, C. Campbell, J. J. Stevenson and A. B. Loughnan, of Palmerston North, and W. H. Lock and J. Farrell, of Auckland. Tho Rev. Father J. E. Ecclcton, formerly on the staff of St. Patrick’s College, and now parish priest at Tauranga, will leave New Zealand on August 17 on a two months' trip to the Dutch East Indies and Singapore. Mr.-A. L. M. Perry, of the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, has been recommended by the examiners for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education of the University of London. Dr. W. E. Adams, son of Dr. G. J. Adams, Wanganui, will leave by the Port Hardy from Wellington on August 6 en route to England to take up the post of senior assistant in the auatomv department and lecturer in histology at Leeds University. Mr. A. T. S. McGhie, LL.B., a graduate of Victoria University College and former secretary of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, has been appointed assistant development secretary of the Overseas League. His headquarters will bo in London, but he will do a good deal of travelling throughout Great Britain. Mr. N. C. Phillips, M.A., of the literary staff of the Christchurch Press, who was recently awarded a postgraduate scholarship in arts by the University of New Zealand, and who is continuing his studies at Merton College, Oxford, has left on the first stage of his journey to England. Before his departure, Mr. Phillips received a presentation from the literary staff of the Press.

Air Vice-Marshal C. T. Maclean, C. 8., D. 5.0., who has been appointed in command of No. 2 (Bomber) Group, Wyton, is a New Zealander and a graduate of Auckland University College. His service began with the Dominion Forces in 1911. In August, 1914, he was appointed to the Royal Fusiliers and was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in December, 1915. For service in France ho was thrice mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the D.S.O. and M.C. Since the war he has commanded a flying training School at Homo and been director of postings, Air Ministry. He has also commanded the air stations ai Hinaidi (Iraq) and Heliopolis, .and from 1929 to 1931 was air officer commanding at Aden.

Mr. W. Burns Smith, an old and highly respected citizen of Otaki, died at Otaki recently. Born at East Liniou, Scotland, in 1862, Mr. Smith attended the Moray House Teachers' Training College and the Edinburgh University before coming out to New Zealand to an appointment at the Carterton School. In 1896 he was appointed headmaster at Ohariu Valley School, and six years later accepted the head mastership of the Otaki School, where he remained until his retirement 22 years later. On retiring on superannuation Mr. Smith took an active part in civic affairs in Otaki, and was a borough councillor for a number of years, part of tho time as deputy Mayor.

The death has occurred of Mr. A. de B. Brandon, barrister and solicitor, and a former Mayor of Wellington. He was a son of the late Hon. A. do B. Bran don, M.L.C., one of Wellington’s pioneers.
