Restoring Durban’s Lost Beach
SAND PUMPING PROVES EFFECTIVE After years of fruitless effort to check the erosion of Durban beach and restore the wide sands which were once a popu lar attraction to holiday-makers from aS parts of South Africa, engineers have ai last found a successful remedy.
j Dredgers which pick up sand in thi bay now tie up at a wharf and pum| their loads through long iron pipes to the beach. After operating for snly four months they have succeeded in reclaim ing about 20 acres of beach. Two loads of sand are delivered a day, and it is confidently anticipated by experts that Durban will soon recover every square inch of the beach it hai lost—perhaps a great deal more.
